Our story on Asopos started in 2007 when we joined forces to stop the pollution in Asopos, the consumption of "drinking" water with hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] and the deaths of people. Our team was few people, but dedicated to a common belief: we can expose the polluters, the Politicians who cover them, the legal system that protects both and we can make a case for the human rights of the people who were dying of cancer (and we did!)!
The key people are
Father Ioannis Economides and Athanasios Panteloglou (who passed away late 2014), Dr Ioannis Zabetakis and Dr Sotiris Stasinos, with the support of an excellent lawyer, Dr Ioannis Ktistakis.
In our pursuit of the origin of the pollution, we targeted the chemical industries in the area, the "rotten" scientists in Greece and ...abroad who covered and cover the pollutants and the legal system that believes that financial interests are above Human Lives.
The whole story started when Father Ioannis discovered that the number of deaths in Oinofita due to cancer had increased massively over the '80 and '90. Something was killing people...and this something was hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] in drinking water, just like Hinkley, California.
